16 people try not to die in this 2D multiplayer sub simulator on an alien world.
Daedalic Entertainment is best
known for publishing quirky (but
good) point-and-click adventure
games, but Barotrauma is something
else entirely. It’s a 2D submarine
simulator for up to 16 players, set
in the alien ocean of Jupiter’s moon
Europa, a deeply inhospitable place
that is both passively and actively
trying to kill you.
You and your team of explorers
are on Europa because the Earth is a
mess and you’re looking for a better
place to live, and for some reason
you’ve decided that your best choice
is a moon where survival is only
possible beneath the surface. But
unlike Subnautica, , the hardware in
Barotrauma seems to require a little
more hands-on effort.
Players will be able to choose from
one of five different classes, including
the captain (only one person gets
to be the boss, though), and work
together in crews of up to 16.
Levels and events are procedurally
generated to help keep things
unpredictable, a “Monster Maker”
will enable players to create their
own subs, levels, and monsters via
the Steam Workshop, and in case
there was any doubt, there’s no rule
that says you actually have to be a
team player.
Barotrauma is being developed by
FakeFish and Undertow Games, and
is expected to launch on Steam Early
Access this spring. Find out more at

And they might be coming much
sooner than we thought.
Epic said it was exploring a Fortnite
respawn system in their AMA last week,
though it sounded like a feature in the earliest
stages of testing. But some eagle-eyed players
have spotted a peculiar van around the map
since Season 8 hit, and it could point to a
respawn system coming much sooner than
we thought.
To see one of the mysterious vans for
yourself, pop into a playground match and
spawn over Retail Row. It’ll be sitting on the
south side of The Block, though it despawns if
you get too close. I was able to hop into replay
mode and use the drone camera to get my
own image.
While word of the van spread, Fortnite leaker
FortTory dug through the game files looking for
anything that might hint at its purpose. They
discovered that within the associated mesh
files, the vehicle is referred to as a ‘Second
Chance Van’. Sounds like a respawn point
to me.
All of this is still conjecture, so don’t take
this as a confirmation that respawning is nigh.
The van could be related to something else
despite the evidence stacked against it, and it’s
also possible that the feature won’t work out
in testing. But I know a lot of people looking
to give Fortnite its own second chance, and a
feature that makes Fortnite’s steep learning
curve a little easier to climb would do well to
reinvigorate the playerbase.
