Integers and Absolute Value

Objective To identify integers • To identify opposites • To find the absolute value of an integer

Judy climbed the Rock of Gibraltar to an elevation
of 1200 feet above sea level. The maximum depth
of the Strait of Gibraltar is more than 1200 feet
below sea level.

You can write these numbers as integers.

 are whole numbers and their

opposites. They are positive, negative,
or zero. The set of integers can be written
as{..., 4, 3, 2, 1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4,.. .},
where “.. .” means that the numbers go
on indefinitely.
The set of integers contains:
the set of counting numbers, {1, 2, 3, 4,...}.
the set of whole numbers, {0, 1, 2, 3, 4,...}.
the set of oppositesof whole numbers,
{..., 4, 3, 2, 1, 0}.

  • For sea level, or the starting point, use 0.
    sea level 0

  • For elevations above sea level, or numbers
greater than 0, use a positiveinteger.
    1200 feet abovesea level 1200 or 1200

  • For elevations below sea level, or numbers
less than 0, use a negativeinteger.
    1200 feet belowsea level 1200

The of an integer is the integer that is the same distance from 0

on a number line but is located on the opposite side of 0. To graphan
integer on a number line, draw a dot to locate the point on the number
line that corresponds to the integer.
