You can also add polynomials algebraically, either vertically or

horizontally. When finding the sum of two polynomials, write each
polynomial in standard form before combining like terms.
What is the sum of x^2 2 xand 4x 3 x^2?
Write each polynomial in
standard form.
Find the sum of both polynomials
using either the horizontal or
vertical method.

Method 1 Compute Horizontally

x^2 2 x 3 x^2 4 x

(x^2 3 x^2 )( 2 x 4 x)
[(1 3)x^2 ] [( 2 4)x]

[2]x^2 (2)x
 2 x^2 2 x

(3x^2 9) mi
(10 x^2 ) mi
(4 2 x^2 ) mi

x^2 ( 2 x)
( 3 x^2 ) 4 x
 2 x^2 2 x

Find the sum.

    1. and and

Find the sum of the polynomials. Use the horizontal method or the vertical method.

  1. 3 x 4 x^2 and 2 4 x 4.xx^2 and 3 x 5 x^2 2

  2. 2 x3 and 4 5 x^2 and x 4 x^2 6. 2 x^2 3 x10 and 4 x 13 3 x^2

7.Discuss and Write Jackie is driving from point A
to point D. What expression represents the distance
from point Ato point D? Write the expression in
simplest form. Explain your steps.

  • Use the Commutative and
    Associative Properties to group
    like terms.

  • Use the Distributive Property
    to combine like terms.

  • Simplify.

Method 2 Compute Vertically

  • Align like terms in columns.

  • Add the terms in each column
    separately by adding their
    coefficients.

So the sum of x^2 2 xand 4x 3 x^2 is 2 x^2 2 x.

x^2 2 x already in standard form
4 x 3 x^2 3 x^2 4 x in standard form
