Fractions Greater Than Fractions Greater Than
One One An improper fraction
has a numerator that is
greater than or equal to
the denominator. Examples
of improper fractions are
_^54 and 2 _^65.

Find 8 _^56 - 2 _^13. Write in simplest form.
Estimate 9 - 2 = 7
8 _^56 8 _^56

  • 2 ^13 - 2 ^26 Rename the fraction using the LCD. Then subtract.

    6 ^36 or 6 ^12 Simplify.

Subtract. Write in simplest form.
d. 5 _ 54 - 1 _ 103 e. 13 _^78 - 9 _^34 f. 8 _^23 - 2 _^12

g. 7 43 - 4 ^13 h. 11 ^56 - 3 ^18 i. 9 ^47 - 5 ^12

Sometimes when you subtract mixed numbers, the fraction in the first
mixed number is less than the fraction in the second mixed number.
In this case, rename the first fraction as a fraction greater than or
equal to one in order to subtract.

(^) Rename Mixed Numbers to Subtract
Find 2 31 - 1 ^23.
Estimate 2 - 1 1 2 = ^12
Since ^13 is less than 32 , rename 2 31 before subtracting.
Change 1 to 3
3.
2 ^13 = 1 ^33 + 1 3 or 1 ^43
2 31 1 ^43 Rename 2 31 as 1 ^43.

  • 1 ^23 - 1 ^23 Subtract the whole numbers and then the fractions.

    _^23
