and Division Equations

Suppose three friends order an appetizer of
nachos that costs $6. They agree to split the cost equally. The figure
below illustrates the multiplication equation 3x = 6, where x
represents the amount each friend pays.

3 x = 62 x =

Since there
are 3 xs, each
x is matched
with $2.

The solution of 3x = 6 is 2. So, each friend pays $2.

Solve each equation using models or a drawing.

  1. 3x = 12 3. 8 = 2x

  2. 2x = - 8 4. 3x = - 9

  3. What operation did you use to find each solution?

  4. How can you use the 8 being multiplied by x to solve 8x = 40?

The expression 3x means 3 times the value of x. The numerical factor of
a multiplication expression like 3x is called a coefficient. So, 3 is the
coefficient of 3x.

Division Property of Equality

Words If you divide each side of an equation by the same nonzero
number, the two sides remain equal.
