Circle Graphs


A type of display used to compare categorical data is a circle graph.
Circle graphs are useful when comparing parts of a whole.

MAGAZINES The spreadsheet below shows the results of a survey
in which students were asked about their favorite type of
magazine. Make a circle graph of the data.

Enter the data in a spreadsheet as shown.

Chart Wizard icon. Choose the Pie chart type. Click Next
twice. Enter the title. Then click Next and Finish.


  1. MAKE A CONJECTURE Use the graph to determine which types of
    magazines were preferred by _^13 and 25% of the students. Explain
    your reasoning.

  2. COLLECT THE DATA Collect some data that can be displayed in
    either a circle or bar graph. Then use a spreadsheet to make both
    types of displays. When would a bar graph be more useful? a
    circle graph? Justify your selection.
