Guide and Review

Key Concepts

Measures of Central Tendency (Lesson 1)

  • Measures of central tendency are numbers that
describe the center of a data set. They are mean,
    median, and mode.

Measures of Variation (Lesson 2)

  • Measures of variation are used to describe the
    distribution of a data set.

  • The range is the difference between the greatest
and the least numbers in the set.

  • Box-and-whisker plots use a number line to show
the distribution of a set of data.

Statistical Displays (Lesson 3)

  • A circle graph shows data as parts of a whole.

  • A histogram displays numerical data organized
    into equal intervals.

  • A stem-and–leaf plot lists individual numerical
    data in a condensed form.

More Statistical Displays (Lesson 4)

  • Scatter plots show a relationship between a set of
    data with two variables.

State whether each sentence is true or false.
If false, replace the underlined word or
number to make a true sentence.

  1. The range is the difference between the
greatest and the least values in a set
    of data.

  2. The mode divides a set of data in half.

  3. The interquartile range is one of the
    measures of central tendency.

  4. A(n) scatter plot shows a relationship
between a set of data with two variables.

  5. The median of the bottom half of a data set
    is the lower quartile.

  6. The mean is the arithmetic average of a set
    of data.

  7. The number or item that appears most
often in a set of data is the mode.

  8. The range is the middle number of the
ordered data, or the mean of the middle
    two numbers.

  9. A(n) variation is a piece of data that is
more than 1.5 times the value of the
    interquartile range beyond the quartiles.
