PSI: Make a Model (Lesson 2A)
Solve the problems by using the make a
model strategy.
- FRAMING A painting 15 inches by
25 inches is bordered by a mat that is
3 inches wide. The frame around the
mat is 2 inches wide. Find the area of the
picture with the frame and mat. - DVDs A video store arranges its
bestselling DVDs in their front window.
In how many different ways can five
bestseller DVDs be arranged in a row?
EXAMPLE 6 The bottom layer of a
display of soup cans has 6 cans in it. If each
layer has one less can than the one below it
and there are 4 layers in the display, how
many cans are there in the display?
Based on the model, there are 18 cans.
Changes in Dimensions (Lesson 2C)
- The two pyramids are similar. The surface
area of the larger pyramid is 108 m^2. Find
the surface area of the smaller pyramid if it
is _^34 the size of the larger pyramid.

- GLUE A cylindrical tube of glue has a
volume of 22.0 cubic inches and a surface
area of 50.3 square inches. What is the
surface area and volume of a similar
cylinder that is larger by a scale factor of 2? - MODEL A model car has a volume of
1,260 cubic centimeters. What is the
volume of a similar rectangular prism
one sixth the size of the original? Round
to the nearest tenth.
EXAMPLE 7 The

surface area of the
box shown is
32 square centimeters.
What is the surface
area of a similar box that is larger by a
scale factor of 4?
S.A. = 32 × 42 or 512
So, the surface area of the similar box that
is larger by a scale factor of 4 is 512 square
centimeters.
EXAMPLE 8 The volume of the box
shown above is 12 cubic centimeters. What
is the volume of a similar box that is larger
by a scale factor of 4?
V = 12 × 43 or 768
So, the volume of the similar box that is
larger by a scale factor of 4 is 768 cubic
centimeters.
