Projects

  1. Get ConnectED Find the population for each of the
fifty United States in the years 2000 and 2010. Also find
the number of members in the House of Representatives
for each state. Go to connectED.mcgraw-hill.com/ to
obtain a recording sheet for this information.

  2. Select 10 states and examine the relationship between
each state’s population and its number of members in
the House of Representatives. Write an equation that
can be used to approximate the number of House of
Representatives members based on a state’s population.

  3. Create a presentation that includes the following:

    • information about the U.S. Census

    • completed recording sheet

    • equation about the relationship between population and number of
members in the House of Representatives

Making the Connection
Use the information collected about the United States Census and the
House of Representatives as needed to help in these investigations.

Language Arts
Research and write an essay about one aspect of the U.S. Census. Some
questions to consider are: Why is the U.S. Census taken? How could the
U.S. Census become more accurate? How are the results used?

Social Studies
Research the history of the House of Representatives. Some questions to
consider are: Why was it established? When was it established? How many
members did it originally have? Who were some of the fi rst members?

  • Use a spreadsheet to examine
    the relationships in Procedure 3.

  • Use publishing software to make
your presentation in the form of a
    booklet, newspaper article, or
    magazine article.

Only a sophisticated and intelligent student could complete
such a challenging task! You have successfully completed your
job. As you can see, it is important for everyone to be able to
analyze and properly display information. You have proven
your ability to graph data, find and interpret information, and
research real-life problems. We hope you have enjoyed
learning about the people that make up our nation.
