Square Roots

Square Roots (Lesson 3A)
Find each square root.

  1. √ 81 30. √ 324

  2. FARMING The area of a farm field is
shown. What is the length of one side of
    the square field?

A = 64,000 ft^2

EXAMPLE 7 Find the square root of 441.

21 · 21 = 441, so √ 441 = 21.

EXAMPLE 8 The area of a square ceramic
tile is 25 square inches. What is the length
of one side?

To find the side length, find √ 25.
5 · 5 = 25, so √ 25 = 5
So, the side length of the square tile is
5 inches.

Estimate Square Roots (Lesson 3B)
Estimate each square root to the nearest
whole number.

  1. √ 26 33. √ 99 34. √ 48

  2. √ 76 36. √ 19 37. √ 52

Graph each square root on a number line.

  1. √ 61 39. √ 132

  2. √ 444 41. √ 12

  3. GAMES The area of a popular square
game puzzle is 77 square inches. What is
the approximate length of one of the
sides of the game board to the nearest
    whole number?

EXAMPLE 9 Estimate √ 29 to the nearest
whole number.

25 < 29 < 36 29 is between the perfect
squares 25 and 36.

√ 25 < √ 29 < √ 36 Find the square root of each number.

5 < √ 29 < 6 √ 25 = 5 and √ 36 = 6

So, √29 is between 5 and 6.

Check Use a number line.

456

25 29 36

Since 29 is closer to 25 than to 36, the best
whole number estimate is 5. ✓
