STRATEGY #7: DIVIDE AND CONQUER
Let’s take another look at the instructions to Part B.
Directions: Each question below consists of two statements, I in the left-
hand column and II in the right-hand column. For each question, determine
whether statement I is true or false and whether statement II is true or false
and fill in the corresponding T or F ovals on your answer sheet. Fill in oval
CE only if statement II is a correct explanation of statement I.
Now let’s look at a question that has nothing to do with chemistry, to show how
the divide and conquer strategy works.
Here’s what to do.
Step 1: Look at the first statement by itself and decide whether it’s true or
false. It’s true. That means we fill in the oval marked T.
Step 2: Look at the second statement by itself. Is it true or false? It’s true.
That means we fill in the second oval marked T.
Step 3: Put the statements together, join them with the “because,” and then
decide if the sentence makes sense. “All persons must breathe because
oxygen is necessary to human survival.”
