FISHY PRICES
- Why can’t you figure out Arty’s cost before find-
ing Bronco’s cost? (The first fact states that Arty is
$1 less than Bronco, so we have to figure out Bronco’s
cost before we can find out Arty’s cost.)
Work together as a class to answer the questions
in “Solve the Problem: Fishy Prices.”
Math Chat With the Transparency
Display the “Make the Case: Fishy Prices” trans-
parency on the overhead. Before children can
decide which character is “wearing smarty pants,”
they need to figure out the answer to the prob-
lem. Encourage children to work in pairs to solve
the problem. Then bring the class together for
another whole-class discussion. Ask:
- Who has the right answer? (Carl Cargo)
- What do you think Carl Cargo did first to solve
the problem? (He matched the greatest cost with the
fish that costs the most. Ringo costs $7.)
- What did Carl do next? (He found Dolly’s cost
next. Dolly costs $5 less than Ringo; 7 – 5 = 2, or
$2.)
- How did Carl find PB and J’s cost? (PB and J cost
$3 more than Dolly; 2 + 3 = 5, or $5.)
- How do you think Shorty Trunks got his
answer? (He probably thought the number in the first
clue was PB and J’s cost.)
- How do you think Levi Sam got his answer?
(He might have thought that the words more than
in the first clue meant that PB and J’s cost must be
the greatest number.)
