COUNT THE SPOTS
- How many spots are on the two dogs in all?
(4)
- How can you figure out the number of spots
in all on three dogs? (Count each spot, or count
by 2s—2, 4, 6—or add 2 + 2 + 2= 6.)
- How can you figure out the number of spots
in all on four dogs? (Count each spot, or count by
2s—2, 4, 6, 8—or add 2 + 2 + 2 + 2= 8.)
Work together as a class to answer the questions
in “Solve the Problem: Count the Spots.”
Math Chat With the Transparency
Display the “Make the Case: Count the Spots”
transparency on the overhead. Before children
can decide which character is “wearing smarty
pants,” they need to figure out the answer to the
problem. Encourage children to work in pairs to
solve the problem. Then bring the class together
for another whole-class discussion. Ask:
- Who has the right answer? (Levi Sam)
- How did you figure it out? (Since one shark has
5 spots, then 3 sharks will have 5 + 5 + 5, or 15
spots in all. You can also count the spots by 5s—5,
10, 15.)
- How do you think Shorty Trunks got the
answer of 8? (Maybe he added 3 + 5 and got 8.)
- How do you think Carl Cargo got the answer
of 10? (He might have counted only two 5s instead
of three 5s.)
