Find the Pattern
Overview
Presented with patterns of black and white circles, children continue the pattern and
identify the relationship between the picture number and the number of circles of
each color.
Algebra
Identify and continue growing patterns • Identify the relationship between the
picture number and the number of black and white circles in that picture
Problem-Solving Strategies
Make drawings • Generalize patterns
Related Math Skills
Count circles in a set • Compare numbers • Count by 2s • Add, or count up to 24
Math Language
How many • Pattern • Picture number
Introducing the Problem Set
Make photocopies of “Solve the Problem: Find the Pattern” (page 44) and distribute to
children. Have children work in pairs, encouraging them to discuss strategies they
might use to solve the problem. You may want to walk around and listen in on some of
their discussions. After a few minutes, display the problem on the board (or on the
overhead if you made a transparency) and use the following questions to guide a
whole-class discussion on how to solve the problem:
- How many black circles are in Picture 1? (1)in Picture 2? (2)in Picture 3? (3)
- What pattern does Ima see? (The number of white circles is always one. The number of black
circles is the same as the picture number.)
