Meanwhile, here’s a quick shout-out to the winners of Crufts’ newest activity,
Inter-Regional Rally.
Emerging triumphant from the seven regions were the Midlands team of
Helen Williams and Splash, Gloria Bonnell and Dylan, Sue Lang and Kete, Marie
Miller and Yogi, John Wykes and Rory, and Peta Braddock and Billy, with Karen
Graham and Poppy as reserves.
“A lot of hard work and many hours of extra training go into building a team
for an event such as Crufts, and 2019 was the Midlands’ year,” said manager Julia
Bodsworth, whose team were runners-up in 2018. “I am thrilled the team of 2019
achieved this — well done everyone!”

Winners of the popular Kennel Club Friends for Life competition were PC Dave
Wardell and his retired police dog, Finn.
“I can’t believe it,” said Dave, from Buntingford, Hertfordshire. “I feel so
emotional. Just by being here we had won already.”
Finn was badly injured when he was stabbed while saving Dave’s life in an
armed attack three years ago. The German Shepherd’s i ght for life led to the
launch of the Finn’s Law campaign, which is driving the Animal Welfare (Service
Animals) Bill — an amendment to the Animal Welfare Act 2006 — through
parliament. Seeking to make attacking a service animal a specii c criminal
of ence, the Bill is now in its i nal stages in the House of Lords.
“It has been a culmination of years of campaigning to get Finn’s story heard,”
added Dave, who received a cheque for £5,000, which he’s donated to German
Shepherd Rescue Elite.
