W

olves are leaders while dogs are followers, scientists have concluded.
The research, published by Scientii c Reports, compared the behaviour of
domesticated dogs with grey wolves at the Wolf Science Center in Vienna, Austria.
Researchers found that although both were equally capable of working with their trainers
to drag a tray of food towards them, the wolves were more willing to try their own tactics.
Friederike Range, from the Konrad Lorenz Institute, at Vetmeduni Vienna University,
explained: “It shows that, while wolves tend to initiate behaviour and take the lead, dogs are
more likely to wait and see what the human partner does and follow that behaviour.”
According to the study,
dogs owe their cooperative
nature to “the wolf within”. It
suggests that 30,000 years
ago, when wolves moved to
the edges of human camps
to scavenge for leftovers,
those that were submissive
to humans were i rst tamed,
then selected for breeding.
This began to alter their
behaviour and genes, and
they slowly evolved into
the domesticated dogs we
know today.

AUSTRIA

T

he RSPCA has warned there could be as
many as seven million dogs suf ering
separation anxiety every time their owners
go out.
And in a bid to raise awareness, and
combat this often overlooked, but
concerning animal welfare issue, the charity
has launched its #DogKind campaign.
According to the RSPCA’s i gures, up to
85 per cent of dogs could feel frightened,
lonely, or sad when left alone for long
periods. And while one study suggested
many may be suf ering in silence, with
50 per cent not showing any signs they
are struggling to cope, others become
destructive when their owners are away.

Chewing furniture, scratching doors,
howling, and messing on carpets are
all typical symptoms of anxiety, says
the charity.
The research revealed that 22 per cent
of owners leave their dogs for at least four
hours, while 75 per cent are unaware their
pets are fretting.
Daisy Hopson, #DogKind campaign
manager, said: “We know that owners are
the centre of their dog’s life so when you
leave your dog, it can be incredibly dii cult
for him — it’s nothing to do with his age,
breed, or where he’s come from.”
