eace and calm has returned
to the UK’s weather thanks
to high pressure but
temperatures have taken a
tumble, and with little wind
there is frost and fog making a
widespread appearance. As Samuel
Taylor Coleridge observed so well in
Frost at Midnight (1798):
“The frost performs its secret
ministry/ Unhelped by any wind.”
But conditions were far worse ten
years ago. November 2010 began
exceptionally mild but towards the
end of the month bitterly cold air
blew in on easterly and northeasterly
winds from the north of Europe and
Siberia — the infamous “Beast from
the East”. On November 24 snow
spread through Scotland into
northeast England and the next day
it snowed heavily across much of the
UK. The temperature overnight on
November 27 fell to minus 18.0C
(minus 0.4F) at Llysdinam, Powys, a
record low for Wales in November,
and the snows piled up higher. By
November 29 hundreds of schools
were closed and the snow spread to
eastern and southern England with
widespread chaos on the roads. On
November 30 hundreds of lorries
were trapped overnight on the M25
in Surrey and there were atrocious
driving conditions and road closures
elsewhere. There was huge
disruption on the railways, and
Gatwick and Edinburgh airports
were closed at the start of
December. Even Guernsey had 9cm
of snow on December 2, by which
time Balmoral in the Highlands was
engulfed in drifts 58cm (23in) deep,
and by December 3 about 6,500
schools were closed across the UK.
That tremendous cold was driven
in part by a powerful episode of La
Niña in the Pacific, when the seas
around the Equator towards South
America turned unusually cool and
sent world weather haywire. There
may now be a chilling sense of deja-
vu, because another strong episode of
La Niña has developed this autumn
— so are we heading for another
extreme freeze? Probably not,
because the cold at the end of 2010
was also driven by an unusually cold
body of water in the North Atlantic,
and nothing like that exists this time.
