Divide the grid
into square or
rectangular
blocks, each
containing one
digit only. Every
block must
contain the
number of cells
indicated by the
digit inside it.

Enter each of
the numbers
from 1 to 9 in
the grid, so that
the six sums
work. We’ve
placed two
numbers to get
you started.
Each sum
should be
calculated left
to right or top
to bottom.

From these letters, make words of
four or more letters, always including
the central letter. Answers must be in
the Concise Oxford Dictionary, excluding
capitalised words, plurals, conjugated
verbs (past tense etc), adverbs ending
in LY, comparatives and superlatives.
How you rate 10 words, average;
14, good; 19, very good; 25, excellent

As with standard Sudoku, fill the grid so that every column,
every row and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1 to 9. Each set
of cells joined by dotted lines must add up to the target number
in its top-left corner. Within each set of cells joined by dotted
lines, a digit cannot be repeated.

Watch and admire the play of two
Swedish women on today’s 3NT
from the online Minor Alt
Invitational III.
At Table One, the star was 32-
year-old Cecilia Rimstedt, sitting
South. West led a spade to East’s
king, East looking no further than
returning his second spade. West
beat declarer’s nine with the ten
and cashed the ace (or he’d never
win it), dummy and East throwing
hearts. At trick four, West exited
with a low heart (best).
Declarer made the key play of ris-
ing with dummy’s ace of hearts, swal-
lowing her bare king. This was so she
could run the queen of diamonds
(she was certain the finesse would
succeed, otherwise West would have
cleared spades). The queen held, as
did the jack that followed. A third
diamond went to East’s king and her
ace, and she next led a club to
dummy’s jack. East won the ace, but
declarer had a plethora of winners in
both hands — game made.
At Table Two, the star was East,
35-year-old Marion Michielsen.
After winning West’s seven of spades
lead with the king, she realised that
returning her second spade would
sever the defensive communication
and force West to cash spade win-
ners, setting up a spade winner for
declarer. She found the only winning
defence of returning a heart, mess-
ing with declarer’s communications.
Say declarer overtakes the king of
hearts with dummy’s ace (his best

y

chance) and runs the queen of dia-

y

monds, then the jack, and leads a dia-
mond to the (king and) ace. When he
next leads a club to the jack, East
wins the ace, then leads her second

spade to the nine and ten, where-
upon West can exit with a club. Stuck
in hand, declarer has to lose two
more spades to West. One down.
In practice, declarer chose not to
overtake the king of hearts with the
ace, leading a club to the jack. East
won the ace and then led her sec-
ond spade. West beat declarer’s
nine with the ten, cashed the ace,
and exited with a club. Declarer
had to lead diamonds from hand
and East scored the king — one
down. [email protected]
