WORKSHEET 5.5: MULTIPLYING MONOMIALS
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Use the property of exponents for multiplication,xm·xn=xm+n, to multiply two or more
monomials. Follow the guidelines below:

  • Add the exponents if the bases are same.

  • Multiply the numerical coefficients.

EXAMPLES
(2x^3 )(4x^7 )= 8 x^10
(− 3 a^5 )(6a)=− 18 a^6
(4a^2 b^6 )(9a^3 b^10 )= 36 a^5 b^16

DIRECTIONS: Find the product.

  1. (y^2 )(y^4 ) 2. (7a^3 )(2a^8 )

  2. (− 2 a^5 )(9a) 4. (7ab)(3a^2 b^2 )

  3. (8a^3 b^2 )(− 2 a^5 b) 6. (−xy^3 )(− 3 xy)(8xy)

  4. (3b^4 )(7ab)(6a^2 b) 8. (5a^2 b^3 )(− 3 a^2 b)(8ab)

CHALLENGE:Margo said that (2x^2 )(2x^2 )= 4 x^4. She said that she added the
coefficients and added the exponents. Do you agree with her answer and
her reasoning? Explain.
