Divide Integers

5-6

A diver went 15 meters below the surface
of the water in 3 minutes. What integer
expresses the diver’s average change in
depth per minute?

To find the integer, n, divide: 15 3 n.

Division and multiplication are inverse
operations. You can use this relationship
to find the quotient of a division with integers.

Multiplication Division
 5 3 15 15 3 5
 5 3 15 15 3 5
 5 3 15 15 3 5
 5 3 15 15 3 5

 15 3 5 or 15 3 5

The diver’s average change in depth
per minute is 5 meters.

You can use rules for dividing integers.

To divide two integers, divide their absolute values.

  • the quotient is positiveif the integers have like signs.
    () () () ()

  • the quotient is negativeif the integers have unlike signs.
    () () () ()

  • the quotient is zero if the dividend is zero.
