The left-hand limit is: f(x) = 2 + 1 = 3.
The right-hand limit is: f(x) = 2(2) − 1 = 3.
Because the two limits are the same, the limit exists.
Condition 3: Does f(x) = f(2)?
The f(x) = 3, but f(2) = 4. Because these aren’t equal, the answer is “no” and the function is not
continuous at x = 2.
TYPES OF DISCONTINUITIES
There are four types of discontinuities you have to know: jump, point, essential, and removable.
A jump discontinuity occurs when the curve “breaks” at a particular place and starts somewhere
else. In other words, f(x) ≠ f(x).
An example of jump discontinuity looks like this.
