(D) Areas that do not receive as much precipitation include polar regions
(cold air cannot hold as much water as warmer air), mid-continental areas
(they are too far from oceans and the clouds have released much of their
moisture before they reach inland), subtropical deserts (air masses are
subsiding), and the leeward sides of mountains near coastal regions (rain
shadow effect).
