  1. (D) Nitrification is the biological oxidation of ammonia into nitrite ions
    followed by the oxidation of nitrites into nitrates. The oxidation of ammonia
    into nitrites is done by Nitrosomonas and Nitrosococcus bacteria. The
    oxidation of nitrite ions into nitrate ions is done by Nitrobacter bacteria.
