Frogs on a Log
A game designed to build the concept of rectangular
arrays for multiplication and division
Materials:
Q (^) 100 small plastic frogs (or centimeter
cubes to represent frogs)
Q 10 craft sticks (popsicle sticks)
Q (^) One 1–10 Spinner copied on white paper,
paper clip
Q (^) One 1–10 Spinner copied on green paper, paper clip
Q (^) Dry erase boards and markers (or paper and pencil) for each player
Directions:
- The fi rst player spins the white spinner to
determine the number of logs. The player
displays this number with craft sticks lined
up side-by-side. - The same player spins the green spinner to
determine the number of frogs on each log.
The player displays the frogs on the logs. - The other players illustrate the rectangular array using squares or
circles on dry erase boards. The players also write the multiplica-
tion equation: white X green = product - The fi rst player with the correct array and equation scores 100
points. - Players take turns modeling frogs on logs, drawing, and writing
equations. - The winner is the fi rst to score 1,000 or greater.
Content Differentiation:
Moving Back: Use white and green dice labeled 1–6 with numerals.
Moving Ahead: Play this game by writing division equations or both
multiplication and division equations with or without the models.
