Number Line Fill Up
A game designed to build the concept
of number line proficiency
Materials:
Q^ Number Line Fill Up template
for each player
Q^ Decahedron die (ten-sided, labeled 0–9) or
0–9 spinner (see page 142)
Directions:
- Each player rolls the decahedron die (or spins the 0–9
spinner) one time to fi nd his start number. - Players decide where to write their start numbers on the
Number Line Fill Up template. - All other rolls (or spins) are numbers shared by all players.
- Each player records the new numbers one at a time. In this
game, players are rolling (or spinning) one digit at a time
to make 2-digit numbers in a counting by ones sequence.
If a number cannot be used, the player waits for the next
roll (or spin). Once a number is written, it cannot be moved. - The winner is the fi rst player to complete an accurate number
line chunk including four 2-digit numbers in order.
Content Differentiation:
Moving Back: Show values with base ten blocks or cubes
as students build the number line, or try the game using
single-digit numbers.
Moving Ahead: Add a third section to each number box and
try the game with 3-digit numbers, or try a skip counting
sequence on the number line.
