The shores of the Dead Sea arethe lowest land on the Earth’ssurface, at 1371 ft (418 m) below sea level. The water within thelake is eight to nine times saltierthan ocean water.
Every day 7 milliontons (tonnes) of waterevaporates fromthe Dead Sea.
The ancient city of Petra was carvedfrom solid rock by the Nabateanpeople in about 400 BCE. It remainedlargely unknown until a Swissexplorer, J. L. Burckhardt, heard ofits whereabouts from the localBedouins in 1812.
