are seeking. If none seem especially appropriate, list the ones that show the greatest
responsibility or skill.
If, for instance, you apply for the nursery job, the employer will be interested in
knowing that you worked every spring preparing your neighbor’s garden: fertiliz-
ing, planting, and mulching. On the other hand, the same job listed in a resume for
the appliance salesperson might refer only to seasonal yard work, with duties listed
merely as responsible for developing necessary routine to maintain health and attrac-
tiveness of garden. Thus, you show self-discipline and responsibility for a product,
both important aspects of a sales job.
Now complete your own list.
STEP 4: Prewriting—Meeting the Educational
Requirements
In a like manner, prepare details about your education and training. Emphasize any-
thing directly related to the position sought, such as majors or minors or even spe-
cific courses. In addition, list any private lessons, seminars, workshops, and other
noncredit classes you may have taken that add to your experience.
STEP 5: Prewriting—Seeking References
Most job applications request references. By including these on your resume, you
will be better prepared to complete any application form the potential employer may
request.
List two or three people, not relatives, who can vouch for your ability, especially as
it relates to the position sought. The more responsible and credible your references,
the more helpful their recommendations. Choose wisely, but make sure you choose
someone who can honestly speak well for you. If a reference begins by saying to your
potential employer, “I really don’t know the applicant well, but.. .” you have done
yourself no favors.
Always get permission from anyone you list as a reference. To neglect getting per-
mission is presumptuous, and your presumption may be just enough to earn a poor
recommendation. After all, by neglecting to ask first, you have demonstrated a lack
of responsibility.
Once you have selected the best references and gained their permission, write down
their names, titles or positions, and addresses. In most cases, you will also include a
home and/or business phone number.
