How the war ended 309
On 23 May 1865, the Army of the Potomac paraded
down Pennsylvania Avenue before government officials
and huge crowds. The next day. Sherman s army, fresh
from its lengthy campaigns, marched. Sherman feared
that the dilapidated condition of his soldiers' clothing and
equipment and their broad campaign stride would prove
embarrassing in the parade. Instead, they delighted the
crowds and made their commander proud once more.
