Marshall, Burke(1922–2003): US assistant attorney general who handled
the Kennedy administration’s response to civil rights demonstrations.
Marshall, Thurgood(1908–93): NAACP chief counsel nicknamed ‘Mr Civil
Rights’ for his many legal victories over discrimination, especially Brown.
Meredith, James (1933– ): First black to enroll at the University of
Mississippi; shot during his March Against Fear.
Moore, Amzie(1911– 82): Businessman and NAACP activist who invited
SNCC to transform Mississippi.
Moses, Robert(1935– ): Low-key organizer of SNCC’s Freedom Summer

Nash, Diane(1938– ): A leader of the Nashville student movement who
