Plate 2.4: Belt Buckle from Sutton Hoo (early 7th cent.). Beginning in 1939 and continuing through the
1980s, archaeologists excavated seventeen curious mounds at Sutton Hoo, a barren stretch of land in
southeast England. Their finds included numerous Anglo-Saxon cremations and burials, the bones of horses,
spears, shields, helmets, large open boats, jewelry, silver bowls, and many other objects, including this
heavy buckle made of gold.
