PRINCES
OF THE ABYSS
The Abyss is a vast wound in the cosmicorder, a bot-tomless pit teeming with creatures thatexist only torend, tear, and destroy. The demon princes, individualdemons of greatpower and determination, bend andshape the Abyss and its inhabitants to meet theireverywhim. These mighty beings imagine themselvesat thecenter of the cosmos. Each demon prince believesthatthe universe will one day be theirs to command, its lawsand structure twisted and warped to match the demons'ideal of perfection. The demon princes' arrogance is exceeded only bytheirambition. While any rational being would dismisstheir goals as empty ambitions sparkedby madness, thetruth remains that the demon princesand their thrallsare amongthe mightiest forces in the planes. It is con-ceivable that, if the Blood War turns dramatically intheir favor, the demon princes could put the rest of theirapocalyptic plans in motion.SCOURGE OF WORLDS
YouMUST UNDERSTAND THAT MY AMBITIONS DO NOTstop here in Doraaka, or evenat the doorstep of Greyhawkor the Amedio junglesbeyond. Oerth is but the first of manyworlds that will fall.- Iuz the Old
The Abyssand its demonic inhabitants are akin to a vi-rus. Whilemost other factions across the planes spreadtheir influenceinto other realms through conquest, con-version, or diplomacy, demons infect a worldby travel-ing there and beginning to transform their environmentto resemble the malleable, chaotic substance oftheirhome plane. If demon
s dwell in a place for a significantamount of time, thearea starts to warp in response tothe abyssal energy that churns within it. If a demonic
infestation is left unchecked, a portal to the Abyss is theresult, and more and more of the essence of the Abysspushes its way through. In time, a plane or a world couldbecome a colony of the Abyss, overrun with demons anddevoid of all other forms of life.INITIAL INFECTIONA full-fledged demonic incursion takes timeto develop.A demon prince might rampage across a worldfor a fewdays or weeks before returning home, but that eventdoesn't qualify as an incursion. After the demon isban-ished, the world suffersno long-term effects, aside fromthe destruction wroughtby the demon. But if demons can dwell undisturbed on a plane for aperiod of time, their continuedpresence begins to erodethe barriers between their location and the Abyss. Itcan take a few years for weakerdemons to warp theirenvironment, while changes beginto occur around thelocation of a demon prince in abouta month. To bringabout these changes, the invaders mustremain inthe same location for some time, usually anarea no more than six miles on a side, tocombine theirinfluence. Fortunately for their would-be victims, thechaotic evil natureof demons means that they rarelyC HAPT ER I I THE BLOOD WARorganize in a way to cause such a disturbance. Demonsthat enter the world are bent on destruction, not con-cerned with greater matters, and inclined to go theirseparate ways unless a powerfulleader can keep themunder control long e nough forthe virus to take hold.During the first stages of an abyssal incursion, thenatural world recoils from the demonicpresence. Plantsbecome twisted versions of themselves.Leering facesappearin leaf patterns, vines writhe of their own accord, and trees grow foul-smelli ng tumorsinstead of leavesas their branches wither and die. Bodiesof water in thearea becometainted and sometimes poisonous, and theweathermight feature extremes of heat, cold, wind, rain,or s now thataren't typical of the normal climate. Livingthings in the areaflee or are killed by the demons. At this stage, natives can s top the incursion bykillingor driving away the demons that infest the area. The ef-fects of the event mightpersist for a few months or evencenturies, but the barriersbe tween the Abyss and theworld remain intact.A GROWING MENACEIf the first stage of the infection conti
nues long enough,a portal opens in the corrupted environmentthat con-nects toa random location in the Abyss. Demons thathappen tobe near the portal can travel through it andinto the world, while the raw stuff of the Abyss also be-gi ns to seep throughthe passage.Even at this stage, the infection has almost nochanceof developing into a true incursion. The immensityofthe Abyss means thata portal's random location is morelikely to be an empty, uninhabitedplace than anythingelse, and demons can't makeuse of the portal unlessthey can locate it. The incursion might be long delayedas a result, but the portal's opening on the other planeremains a lurking threat until it is closed. As more demons find and usethe portal, the Abyssbecomes strongly linked to the world, and the region'stransformation grows more extreme. The odd but stillmundaneweather gives way to storms that drop burningembers, orwinds that s hriek in all directions, seizingliving creaturesand hurling the m against the ground. The environment becomes inimical to all livingth ings.At this point, the incursion is s till in a state offiux. The demons aren't yet directed by a single will. Unlessa powerful demon dominatesall the others, the area iswracked by fighting asone demon after another claimsprimacy, only to be overcome. The tie to the Abyss isstill fragile enough that, as demons are slain, the portalgrows smaller and weaker. If the invaders are reduced
to about half the number that were present when theportalwas created, the opening winks out of existence.A STAIN ON REALITYIn its third phase, the demonic virus invades fully andbecomes a part of the world. Simply killing thedemonsin an afflicted area is no longer enough to removetheAbyss's stain.
