THE UNKNOWABLE
ABYSSThe Abyss
is a puzzle to those
who study demons and
an attract
ion for those who seek
power. It isn't as purelychaotic as Limbo
nor as pliable, and yet demon
lordscan shape its esse
nce by their subconscious
will. Somedemon lords emerge
from the planar stuff,
others seemto have been in
existence since the start
of time, andstill
others are interlopers
from outside the Abyss.
Sev-eral theories exist about
what principles dictate who
cangain a demon lord's power,
or, if no such principles
exist,how that power
might be seized.Most mortals
would rather be annihilated
than havetheir souls travel to the
Abyss, but some see its
chaos assomething that can be
harnessed and manipulated
bythose of sufficient will. A powerful soul might
be able to
dominate
demons, retrieve weapons
of the Blood Warto use
in mortal conflicts, or discover
spells known onlyin the Abyss-and
the madly a mbitious might
even seekout the means of
becoming a demon lord.EVER-CHANGING
LAYERSThe physical nature of the Abyss
is something that
few
mortal minds
can understand. Those
who discuss s uchmatters use
the term "layer" to defin
e a certain part ofthis infinite expanse. That
nomenclature, to the
extentthat it implies a particular
configuration, is misleading. The Abyss is a chaoti
c tangle of miniature worlds, each one
shaped by the demon lord
that claims primacy
over it.
Within the layers it controls
, a demon lord ma-
nipulates
conditions to match its view
of how that worldbest serves the lo
rd's desires.Of course, keep
ing control of a layer involve
s fightingoff other demon
s that are looking to expa
nd their do-
mains.
From time to time, a layer
changes hands or
isseeming
ly obliterated in a battle
(perhaps to be rebo
rn
in another loc
ation). For this reason, imposing
a senseof order on the relationship
between the Abyss's
layers
is a fool's errand.
All that can be determined
at any
given time
is which lord holds sway
over which parts
of the Abyss, and which
areas are being contested
by
two or more lords. And
as soon as such a fact b
ecomesknown, it might
already be obsolete.
GETTING AROUNDPortals connect various
locations in the Abyss,
but thesepassages are as
unreliable as anything el
se in this envi-ronme nt. Most
of them fluctuate, sometimes
winking in
and
out of existence or connecti
ng to diffe rent layers
at
rand
om. Rituals exist that
travelers can use to attune
aportal to a certain domain.
However, the exact specifica-tions of such
a ritual vary for each pot
e ntial destination.

Those
who would navigate the
Abyss always enter theplace in
a random location. From
the re, they must locatea portal
and then perform the
ritual that enables them
tofind a specific destination.

other living things.- Orcus
As bei
ngs of utter chaos and absolute
evil, demons haveno concept
of empathy. Each
demon believes that onlyits needs and desires
matter.This self-centeredn
ess applies even with
regard toother demons.
These fiends have no particular
affinityfor
their own kind, which
is the biggest reason why
theyseldom cooperate with one
another unless they areforced to subm
it to a de mon lord or
other leader.Going even
farther, every demon
sees itself as therightful inheritor
of the cosmos. It
is driven to destroyall other
living creatures, or at lea
st command theirabsolute loyalty. In due
time, the laws of the universewill bend to its will
, shifting to bring about its
vision of aworld of absolute perfe
ction with the demon
at its center.ONE COSMOS
, INFINITE VISIONSAll demons see
k to satisfy their whims
and force othersaround them
to serve their purposes.
What specificallymotivates a
demon varies greatly from
one to anotherand often changes within
the same demon, but it
is al-ways attach
ed to fulfillment of its des
ires.Less intelligent and
less powerful demons typi
callyhave correspondingly
modest visions
for what it meansto be the
center of their universes.
All demons have aninstinctive
sense of their own statu
s, and they typicallydon't set impossible goal
s-a lesser demon, for
instance,might simply run amok
when unleashed into
the world,its only
desire to spread chaos,
but a marilith or otherpowerful
de mon usually has
an inte nt that goes beyondmerely
causing carnage, and
a plan to achieve it.DEMONIC
AMULETS: BLESSING
AND CURSESome demon lords
have a way of cheating death,
but thisgreat benefit
doesn't come without its own
perils. A de-mon that stores
part of its essence in a
demonic amuletcan avoid
being destroyed even if it is
killed in the Abyss.On the
other hand, anyone else who
lays claim to such anitem can command
the demon to do as they wish. For this reason,
demon lords hide their amulets
awayand trust no one,
not even their followers,
with knowledgeof the location.
Such a site is usually protected
with in-tricate traps,
mindless servants, and other
defenses thatbring no ris k of subversion
or betrayal.If an archdevil were
ever to acquire a demonic
amulet,that event could signal
a tipping point in the
Blood War. IfAsmodeus held
Demogorgon's amulet, for
instance, thedemon lord might
find itself in a position
from which thereis no escape.
