H OLES I N LOLT H'S WEBLolth is far from omniscient, despite what her priestessessay. There are drow who live without bending to the tyr-anny ofher worship. Communities of renegades whodispute Lolth's primacy often raise another ofthe DarkSeldarine up astheir patron. Although this amounts to ex-changing one evil oppressor for another, any escape fromLolth's web can feel like freedom. The Acropolis ofThanatos, erectedin the ruins of adrow city wiped out by plague in the Underdarkof FaerOn,was home to a drow settlement of a few thousand ruledby necromancer clerics of Kiaransalee. It existedfor a fewdecades before worshipers of Lolth and worshipers ofEil-istraee teamed up to eliminate its leaders.never portrayed unmasked, and partly because anonymity is a wise precautionwhen one challenges the socialstructure of the drow in evena small way.To quash any challenge to the matriarchy that Vhaer-aun might inspire in his followers, some drow commu-nitiespreach that he wears a mask to hide the terriblescars from the wounds inflictedon him by Lolth as pun-ishment for his arrogance. His silence, too, is part of hispunishment, for his tongue was removedfor questioningLolth's orders.Worshipers of Vhaeraun who believe thisdogma sometimesritually scar and silence themselvesas signs of theirdevotion, and then serve as voiceless, masked bodyguards for the matrons of theirhouse.ZINZERENAAs the patron of assassination, illusions, and lies,Zinzerena personifies cruelty, stealth, misdirection, andsurvival by any means necessary. In some ways, Malykis her reflection, and in many interpretations of theage-old stories, the two gods aresiblings or lovers. ButZinzerena is more palatable to femaledrow than Malyk, and she condones the study of arcanemagic. The liturgy of Zinzerena is passed on in the form offolk tales, forher faith has no place among the lead-ership of drowsociety. Her tales usually describe herhiding and waiting until her foes are weakenedor laxin their attention before she attacks. Those whorespector revere Zinzerena are almost always of modestsocialstatus, or worse. Eventhe most prestigious of nobleestates, where a high priestessreigns supreme, mighthave a number of her followers among the commonerswho work as servants and staff. Only the most capri-cious of nobles would enter her priesthood, thoughsome have done so. Inevitably, when such traitors arediscovered, they are cast out fromtheir houses. Ironi-cally, these maverick nobles oftenbecome leading fig-uresin Zinzerena's cult, for they are the best educatedand mostpolitically experienced of her followers. Heradherentscome from a wide range of occupations, in-cluding common thieves, laborers, guides, physicians, poets, and nearly any other profession. Whatthey allshare is a rebellious spirit and a desire for change. In some stories,Zinzerena is Lolth's daughter, whowas spir ited away andhidden from her by iJlusions. In other tales, she beginslife as a mortal elf who usesglamors to trick her way into the company of the gods.Regardless, Zinzerena always has some element ofillusion magic about her, andshe uses it and other de-CH1\PTE

The onlyfigurein the Dark Seldarine immune to Zinzerena's de-ceptions is Lolth, although even theQueen of Spiders issometimestricked when Zinzerena shifts blame for heractions ontoothers. Not many female drow devote their lives tothe studyof magic, because it's held to be a low-status avocationmore suited to males. Most females who pursueit seri-ously do so in secret. Even rumors that a drow matronpractices arcane magic, if they aren't quashed, can sab-otage her standing in society. Yet there's no denyingthatknowledge of arcane magic could be a great boon toanambitious female. Zinzerena's worshipers encouragethis pursuit and offer tutelage and tools in exchange fora candidate's alliance with Zinzerena's secret cult.EILISTRAEEMostdrow know nothing of Eilistraee. Matron mothersof the mostpowerful houses closely guard the scrollsthat chronicle her existence. They retainthem for thesake of remaining aware of the enemy theydescribe: adrow god who would spirit away all of Lolth'sworship-ers to the sur face world. The matron mothers warn those who go to the surfaceon raids to retreatif they can s ee the moon-practicaladvice, it would seem. But an equally important reasonis that Eilistraee is known to work her wiles under thelight of the moon, so thatdrow are more susceptible toher lure at such times. Thematrons also direct the raid-ers to flee back undergroundif any of their number hearmusic they find appealing, suchas a parent's lullabyor the chorus of a rousing song carriedon the mind, becauseEilistraee's call to drow who would be free ofLolth's webis often delivered within dulcet tunes thataren't ofotherworldly origin.Eilistraee is a god of moonlight, song, dance, and, most important, the rejection of the evil waysof Loi th.Drow who feellike outsiders in their society, who reactwith disgust to the evilsperpetrated by their kind, whocome to the surfaceand fall in love with the stars- theseare the ones who might be pleased to hear Eilistraee'scall. If they respond to it by going to the surface and
staying there, Eilistraee offers no guarantee of theirsafety and no promise of acceptancein the world above. But she opens her followers'hearts to the wonder of thenature in the night, and he r songsand signs can show adrowhow to persevere in that alien environment.Thescrolls that the matron mothers guard so closelyattestthat Eilistraee turned against Lolth but knewbetter than to seek solace among the Seldarine. Her po-sition among the other drow gods remainsuncertain, asis the fate ofthe souls of those who turn to her worship.Drow who arebeloved by Eilistraee sometimes appearto vanish when they die, as the body dissolves into palelight and leaves noclue to where the soul has gone.VULKOORDrow of the world of Eberronworship a scorpion-godnamed Vulkoor, which is their world's equivalent ofLolth.Vulkoor is often portrayed or envisioned as agiantscorpion or as a hybrid creature with the head,
