búgù 不顾 [modif: 不 not + 顾 attend to] V disregard, in spite of
bùguǎn 不管 CONJ no matter (what, who, how, etc.) ■ 不管你在哪里看到他,他都带着他的小 狗。
Bùguǎn nǐ zài nǎlǐ kàndào tā, tā dōu dàizhe tā de xiǎo gǒu. No matter where you see him, he is
with his puppy. ■ 不管他多么忙,他总是每天给 妈妈发一份电子邮件。Bùguǎn tā duōme
máng, tā zǒngshì měi tiān gěi māma fā yí fèn diànzǐ yóujiàn. No matter how busy he is, he always
sends his mother a daily e-mail.
NOTE: 不管 bùguǎn may be replaced by 不论 búlùn or 无论 wúlùn, but 不管 bùguǎn is more colloquial.


búguò 不过 CONJ same as 但是 dànshì. Used colloquially.
bù hǎo yìsi 不好意思 IDIOM I’m embarrassed (polite phrase used when you are offering an apology, giving
a gift, or receiving a gift or other acts of kindness) ■ 不好意思,我又迟到 了。Bù hǎoyìsi, wǒ yòu
chídào le. I’m sorry I’m late again. ■ 这点小礼物,请您收下,不好意 思。Zhè diǎn xiǎo lǐwù,
qǐng nín shōuxià, bù hǎoyìsi. Please accept this little present.


NOTE: 不好意思 bù   hǎoyìsi literally   means   “I’m    embarrassed.”   It  is  easy    to  understand  why you say it when
you are apologising or receiving a gift. When you are giving a gift, however, you also say it to imply
that the gift is so insignificant that you feel embarrassed about it.

bú jiàndé 不见得 ADV not necessarily, unlikely ■ 这位医生的诊断不见得对,你最好再看另一位 医
生。Zhè wèi yīshēng de zhěnduàn bùjiànde duì, nǐ zuìhǎo zàì kàn lìng yí wèi yīshēng. This
doctor’s diagnosis is not necessarily correct; you’d better see another one
bùjīn 不禁 ADV cannot help, cannot refrain from
bùjǐn 不仅 CONJ same as 不但 búdàn. Often used in writing.
bùjiǔ 不久 N not long afterwards, near future, soon ■ 他们不久就要回国了。Tāmen bùjiǔjiù yào
huíguó le. They’re returning to their country soon.
bùkān 不堪 I V (used before another verb) cannot bear, cannot stand 不堪设想 bùkān shèxiǎng (of
consequences) cannot be contemplated, too bad even to contemplate II ADV (used after an adjective)
utterly 混乱不堪 hùnluàn bùkān in utter chaos
bù kě sīyì 不可思议 ADJ unthinkable, beyond comprehension
búkèqi 不客气 [modif: 不 not + 客气 polite, standing on ceremony] you’re welcome, not at all ■“谢谢
你!”不客气。”“Xièxie nǐ!” “Búkèqi.” “Thank you!” “You’re welcome.”
búkuì 不愧 [modif: 不 not + 愧 be ashamed] V be worthy of, deserve to be called
búliào 不料 ADV unexpectedly
búlùn 不论 CONJ same as 不管 bùguǎn. Used more in writing.
bùmiǎn 不免 ADV would only be natural, unavoidably, inevitably
búnàifán 不耐烦 ADJ impatient
bùrán 不然 CONJ otherwise, or ■ 你别说了,不 然我真要生气了。Nǐ bié shuō le, bùrán wǒ zhēn yào
shēngqì le. Don’t say any more, or I’ll really be angry. ■ 他一定遇到了非常麻烦的事,不然情
绪不会这么坏。Tā yídìng yùdàole fēicháng máfan de shì, bùrán qíngxù bú huì zhème huài. He
must have gotten into big trouble; otherwise he wouldn’t be in such a bad mood.
NOTE: To be more emphatic, you can use 不然的话 bùrán de huà instead of 不然 bùrán.
