duì 对¹ TRAD 對 V 1 treat, deal with ■ 她对我很 好。Tā duì wǒ hěn hǎo. She treats me well. (→ She is
nice to me.) ■ 我的批评是对事不对 人。Wǒ de pīpíng shì duì shì bú duì rén. My criticism
concerns the issue, not the person. 2 same as 对于 duìyú
duì 对² TRAD 對 ADJ correct, true (ANTONYM 错 cuò) ■ 你的话很对。Nǐ de huà hěn duì. Your words are
correct. (→ You’re right.) ■ 你说得很对。Nǐ shuō de hěn duì. You spoke correctly. (→ You’re
right.)
NOTE: 对不对 duì bu duì is used at the end of a sentence to form a question, e.g. ■ 他回答得对不对? Tā huídá de
duì bu duì? Did he answer correctly? ■ 你是英国人,对不对?Nǐ shì Yīngguórén, duì bu duì? You’re from the
UK, aren’t you? ■ 中华文明是世 界上最古老的文明,对不对?Zhōnghuá wénmíng shì shìjiè shang zuì gǔlǎo de
wénmíng, duì bu duì? Chinese civilization is the oldest in the world, isn’t it?


duì 对³ TRAD 對 MEASURE WORD pair, two (matching people or things) 一对花瓶 yí duì huāpíng two matching

duìbǐ 对比 [comp: 对 check + 比 compare, contrast] V compare and contrast ■ 你对比一下中 文和英
文,就会发现很多有趣的问题。Nǐ duìbǐ yíxià Zhōngwén hé Yīngwén, jiù huì fāxiàn hěn duō
yǒuqù de wèntí. If you compare and contrast Chinese and English, you will find many interesting
issues.
duìbuqǐ 对不起 IDIOM I’m sorry, I beg your pardon ■ 对不起,我迟到了。Duìbuqǐ, wǒ chídào le. Sorry,
I’m late. ■ 对不起,我没听清楚,请你再 说一遍。Duìbuqǐ, wǒ méi tīng qīngchu, qǐng nǐ zài
shuō yíbiàn. I’m sorry, I didn’t catch it. Could you please say it again?


NOTE: 对不起 duìbuqǐ is    a   very    useful  idiomatic   expression  in  colloquial  Chinese.    It  is  used    when    you’ve
done something wrong or caused some inconvenience to others. For more formal occasions, use 请原谅
qǐng yuánliàng please forgive me or my apologies.

duìchèn 对称 N & ADJ symmetry; symmetrical 不对称 búduìchèn asymmetrical
duìdài 对待 [comp: 对 deal with + 待 treat] V treat (people), approach (matters)
duìfāng 对方 [modif: 对 the opposite side + 方 side] N the other side, the other party ■ 你必须清 楚地
了解对方的企图。Nǐ bìxū qīngchu de liǎojiě duìfāng de qǐtú. You must have a clear idea of the
other party’s intention.
duìfu 对付 V cope with, deal with ■ 这种不讲道理 的人,实在难对付。Zhè zhǒng bù jiǎng dàolǐ de
rén, shízài nán duìfu. It is indeed difficult to deal with such unreasonable people. ■ 我不知道怎么
样对付这种情况。Wǒ bù zhīdào zěnmeyàng duìfu zhè zhǒng qíngkuàng. I don’t know how to
cope with such a situation.
duìhuà 对话 V & N have a dialogue; dialogue ■ 他能够流利地用中文对话。Tā nénggòu liúlì de yòng
Zhōngwén duìhuà. He is able to have a dialogue in fluent Chinese.
duìkàng 对抗 [comp: 对 opposite + 抗 resist] V antagonize, oppose vigorously
duìlì 对立 [modif: 对 opposite + 立 stand] V oppose, be hostile
duìlián 对联 N antithetical couplet written on scrolls
duìmiàn 对面 N opposite, the opposite side ■ 学 校的对面是一座公园。Xuéxiào de duìmiàn shì yí zuò
gōngyuán. Opposite the school is a park.
duìshǒu 对手 [modif: 对 opposite + 手 hand] N opponent 竞争对手 jìngzhēng duìshǒu opponent in a
competition, rival
duìxiàng 对象 N 1 person or thing to which an action or a feeling is directed, object ■ 她研究的对 象是
学前儿童。Tā yánjiū de duìxiàng shì xuéqián értóng. Preschool children are the object of her
study. 2 marriage partner, fiancé(e) ■ 他已经三十 多岁了,还没有对象。Tā yǐjīng sānshí duō suì
