letter, two faxes and eight e-mail messages. ■ 我要休息一会 儿，谁的电话都不接。Wǒ yào
xiūxi yíhuìr, shuí de diànhuà dōu bù jiē. I’ll have a rest and take no calls. 2 meet and greet (a
visitor) ■ 王先生是第一 次到这里来，你应该去机场接他。Wáng xiānsheng shì dì-yī cì dào
zhèli lái, nǐ yīnggāi qù jīchǎng jiē tā. This is the first time that Mr Wang’s coming here. You should
go and meet him at the airport.
jiēchù 接触 [comp: 接 join + 触 touch] V get in touch (with) ■ 我先和他们初步接触一下，了解他 们
的想法。Wǒ xiān hé tāmen chūbù jiēchù yíxià, liǎojiě tāmen de xiǎngfǎ. I’ll first get in touch
with them tentatively to find out their thoughts.
jiēdài 接待 [comp: 接 receive + 待 entertain] V receive (a visitor) ■ 今天市长不接待。Jīntiān
shìzhǎng bù jiēdài. The mayor is not receiving visitors today.
jiēdào 接到 [v+compl: 接 receive + 到 arrive] V have received ■ 我还没有接到会议邀请信。Wǒ hái
méiyǒu jiēdào huìyì yāoqǐngxìn. I have not yet received a letter of invitation to the conference.
jiējiàn 接见 [comp: 接 receive + 见 see] V receive (somebody), meet (somebody), give an audience ■ 教
育部长昨天接见了中学教师代表。Jiàoyù bùzhǎng zuótiān jiējiànle zhōngxué jiàoshī dàibiǎo.
The Minister of Education received representatives of secondary school teachers yesterday.
jiējìn 接近 V be close to, be near ■ 她接近董事 会，很了解内情。Tā jiējìn dǒngshìhuì, hěn liǎojiě
nèiqíng. She is close to the board of directors and knows the inside information. ■ 已经接近下班
时间了，工作只做了一半。Yǐjīng jiējìn xiàbān shíjiān le, gōngzuò zhǐ zuòle yí bàn. It is close to
the time to get off work, but the job is only half done.
jiēlián 接连 ADV one after another, in succession
jiēshòu 接受 [comp: 接 receive + 受 accept] V accept ■ 我们不接受礼物。Wǒmen bù jiēshòu lǐwù.
We do not accept gifts.
jiēzhe 接着 CONJ and immediately, then, at the heels of (a previous action or event) ■ 我先听到 有人叫
我，接着小王跑了进来。 Wǒ xiān tīngdào yǒu rén jiào wǒ, jiēzhe Xiǎo Wáng pǎole jìnlai. I
first heard someone calling me, and then Xiao Wang ran into the room.
jiē 街 N street (条 tiáo) ■ 我家前边的那条街总是很安 静。Wǒ jiā qiánbian de nà tiáo jiē zǒngshì
hén ānjìng. The street in front of my home is always quiet. 街上 jiē shang on the street ■ 街上人很
多。Jiē shang rén hěn duō. There are many people in the street. 步行街 bùxíng jiē pedestrian street /
逛大街 guàng dàjiē stroll the streets, do window shopping
jiēdào 街道 [comp: 街 street + 道 way] N street (条 tiáo) ■ 这里的街道很安静。Zhèli de jiēdào hěn
ānjìng. The streets in this area are quiet.
jié 节¹ TRAD 節 N festival ■ 这个节我过得很愉 快。Zhège jié wǒ guò de hěn yúkuài. I had a very
happy festival. ■ 这个地方一年有好几 个节。Zhège dìfang yì nián yǒu hǎo jǐ ge jié. There’re
