kǒngjù 恐惧 [comp: 恐 fear + 惧 fear] V be in great fear of, dread
kǒngpà 恐怕 [comp: 恐 fear, dread + 怕 fear] ADV I’m afraid, perhaps ■ 他的病恐怕两三天好不 了。
Tā de bìng kǒngpà liǎng-sān tiān hǎobuliǎo. I’m afraid he won’t recover in a couple of days.


NOTE: 恐怕 kǒngpà and 也许 yēxǔ may both    mean perhaps, but 恐怕 kǒngpà implies that    what    will    perhaps
happen is undesirable.

kòngzhì 控制 V control ■ 我们要控制人口的增长, 提高人口的质量。 Wǒmen yào kòngzhì rénkǒu
de zēngzhǎng, tígāo rénkǒu de zhìliàng. We should control population growth and raise
population quality. ■ 她控制不住自己的感情,大哭起来。Tā kòngzhì bú zhù zìjǐ de gǎnqíng,
dàkū qǐlai. She couldn’t control her emotions and began to cry loudly.

kòngbái 空白 [comp: 空 vacant + 白 white] N blank space
kòngxì 空隙 [comp: 空 vacant + 隙 crack] N narrow gap, brief interval
kòngxián 空闲 ADJ & N be free, not occupied; free time, leisure
kǒu 口 I N mouth ■ 病从口入。Bìng cóng kǒu rù. Disease enters your body by the mouth. (→ Bad food
causes disease.) II MEASURE WORD (for members of a family) ■ 我家有四口人。Wǒ jiā yǒu sì kǒu rén.

kǒuhào 口号 N slogan (条 tiáo) ■ 这种政治口号 已经没有人喊了。Zhè zhǒng zhèngzhì kǒuhào
yǐjīng méiyǒu rén hǎn le. Nobody shouts such political slogans any more.

kòu 扣 V buckle, fasten up
kòuyā 扣押 V detain, hold in custody
kū 哭 V cry, weep, sob (ANTONYM 笑 xiào) ■ 别哭 了,有话好好说。Bié kū le, yǒu huà hǎohǎo shuō.
Don’t cry. Speak up if you have something to say. ■ 她难过得哭起来。Tā nánguò de kū qǐlai. She
was so sad that she cried.
kūqì 哭泣 V sob, cry softly
kū xiào bu dé 哭笑不得 IDIOM not know whether to laugh or cry, find something both funny and annoying
