rán 然 ADV however
rán’ér 然而 CONJ same as 但是 dànshì. Usually used in writing.
ránhòu 然后 CONJ afterwards, ... and then 先 ... 然后 ... xiān ... ránhòu ... first ... and then ... ■ 他每天早
上先跑步，然后吃早饭。Tā měi tiān zǎoshang xiān pǎobù, ránhòu chī zǎofàn. Every morning he
first jogs and then has breakfast.

ránliào 燃料 [modif: 燃 burn + 料 material, stuff] N fuel
ránshāo 燃烧 [comp: 燃 burn + 烧 burn] V burn ■ 森林大火燃烧了三天三夜。Sēnlín dàhuǒ ránshāole
sān tiān sān yè. The forest fire raged three days and nights.
rǎn 染 V dye ■ 有些年轻人喜欢染头发。Yǒuxiē niánqīngrén xǐhuan rǎn tóufa. Some young people
like to dye their hair.

rǎng 嚷 V yell, shout ■ 别嚷了，有话好好说。Bié rǎng le, yǒu huà hǎohǎo shuō. Stop yelling. Speak
nicely if you have something to say.
ràng 让 TRAD 讓 V 1 let, allow ■ 你应该让那辆车 先行。Nǐ yīnggāi ràng nà liàng chē xiānxíng. You
should let that vehicle go first. (→ You should give way to that vehicle) ■ 让我想一想。Ràng wǒ
xiǎng yi xiǎng. Let me think. 2 make ■ 他的话让 我明白了许多道理。Tā de huà ràng wǒ
míngbaile xǔduō dàolǐ. What he said made me understand many things. (→ What he said
enlightened me.)

ráo 饶 TRAD 饒 V have mercy on, forgive ■ 饶了我 吧！Ráo le wǒ ba! Please spare me! Please don’t kill

Road works ahead. Vehicles must detour.
rě 惹 V cause (something undesirable), invite (trouble, etc.) ■ 别惹麻烦了。Bié rě máfan le. Don’t ask
for trouble. ■ 你和这种人交朋友会惹 爸爸生气。Nǐ hé zhè zhǒng rén jiāo péngyou huì rě bàba
shēngqì. It will make daddy angry if you make friends with such people.
rěhuò 惹祸 V make serious trouble, court trouble
rè 热 TRAD 熱 ADJ hot (ANTONYM 冷 lěng) ■ 香港的 夏天很热。Xiānggǎng de xiàtiān hěn rè. Summer in
Hong Kong is very hot. ■ 我想喝一杯热水，不 要冷水。Wǒ xiǎng hē yì bēi rè shuǐ, bú yào lěng
shuǐ. I want to drink a glass of hot water, not cold water.
