zāo 遭 V meet with (misfortune)
zāodào 遭到 V suffer, encounter, meet with ■ 公用电话常常遭到破坏。Gōngyòng diànhuà
chángcháng zāodào pòhuài. Public telephones are often vandalized.
zāoshòu 遭受 V suffer, be subjected to ■ 去年 这个地区连续遭受自然灾害。Qùnián zhège dìqū
liánxù zāoshòu zìrán zāihài. Last year this area suffered repeated natural disasters.
zāoyāng 遭殃 [v+obj: 遭 suffer + 殃 disaster] V suffer disaster, suffer terribly
zāoyù 遭遇 [comp: 遭 encounter + 遇 meet] V encounter, meet with
zāo 糟 ADJ messy
zāogāo 糟糕 [modif: 糟 messy + 糕 cake] I ADJ in a mess, terrible, very bad ■ 我这次考试很糟 糕。
Wǒ zhè cì kǎoshì hěn zāogāo. I did very poorly in the exam. ■ 情况很糟糕。Qíngkuàng hěn
zāogāo. The situation is in a shambles. II INTERJ How terrible! What bad luck! ■ 真糟糕,我的钥 匙
丢了。Zhēn zāogāo, wǒ de yàoshi diū le. How terrible! I’ve lost my keys!
zāota 糟蹋 V waste, ruin
zǎo 早 ADJ early ■ 现在才三点钟,还早呢! Xiànzài cái sān diǎnzhōng, hái zǎo ne! It’s only three
o’clock. It’s still early! ■ 李先生每天很早 上班,很晚下班。Lǐ xiānsheng měi tiān hěn zǎo
shàngbān, hěn wǎn xiàbān. Every day Mr Li goes to work early and comes off work late.


NOTE:   A   common  greeting    among   the Chinese when    they    meet    in  the morning is 早 zǎo or 你早 Nǐ   zǎo.

zǎochén 早晨 [modif: 早 early + 晨 early morning] N early morning (approximately 6–9 a.m.) ■ 他早晨
六点半起床。Tā zǎochén liù diǎn bàn qǐchuáng. He gets up at half past six in the morning. ■ 很
多人喜欢在早晨锻炼身体。Hěn duō rén xǐhuan zài zǎochén duànliàn shēntǐ. Many people like
to exercise in the early morning.
zǎofàn 早饭 [modif: 早 early + 饭 meal] N breakfast (顿 dùn) ■ 我今天起得太晚了,没有时间吃 早
饭。Wǒ jīntiān qǐ de tài wǎn le, méiyǒu shíjiān chī zǎofàn. I got up too late today and didn’t have
time for breakfast.
zǎoshang 早上 N same as 早晨 zǎochén
zǎo 澡 N bath (See xǐzǎo 洗澡.)
zào 皂 N soap (See xiāngzào 香皂.)
zào 造 V make, build ■ 中国人在公元一世纪就会 造纸。Zhōngguórén zài gōngyuán yī shìjì jiù huì
zào zhǐ. The Chinese knew how to make paper as early as in the first century.
zàochéng 造成 result in, give rise to ■ 不幸的童 年造成他性格上的很多缺点。Búxìng de tóngnián
zàochéng tā xìnggé shang de hěn duō quēdiǎn. An unhappy childhood gave rise to many faults in
his character.
zàofǎn 造反 V & N rebel; rebellion
zàojù 造句 V & N make sentences; sentence-making 用所给的词语造句 yòng suǒ gěi de cíyǔ zàojù Make

zàoxíng 造型 N modelling
zào 噪 ADJ noisy

zào 燥 ADJ dry (See gānzào 干燥.)
zé 则 TRAD 則 CONJ in that case, then ■ 不进则 退。Bú jìn zé tuì. If you don’t make progress, then you’ll
fall behind.
NOTE: 则 zé is only used in formal Chinese. In everyday Chinese, use 那 nà or 那么 nàme instead. See note
on 那么 nàme.
