zhèli 这里 PRON this place, here ■ 你在这里住了几 年了？Nǐ zài zhèli zhùle jǐ nián le? How long have
you been living here? ■ 我刚来的时候，不习惯这 里的天气。Wǒ gāng lái de shíhou, bù xíguàn
zhèli de tiānqì. When I first came, I wasn’t used to the weather here.
NOTE: In spoken Chinese 这里 zhèli can be replaced by 这儿 zhèr.zhème 这么 PRON like this, in this manner, so ■ 这件衣服这么贵，我没想到。Zhè jiàn yīfu zhème guì,
wǒ méi xiǎngdào. I did not expect this dress to be so expensive. ■ 你这么快就把文章写 好了，佩
服佩服！Nǐ zhème kuài jiù bǎ wénzhāng xiě hǎo le, pèifu pèifu! It is simply admirable that you
wrote the article so fast!
zhèxiē 这些 PRON these ■ 这些书你都看过吗？ Zhèxiē shū nǐ dōu kànguo ma? Have you read all
these books?
zhèyàng 这样 PRON 1 same as 这么 zhème. Used only in writing. 2 such ■ 他就是这样的一个人，根
本靠不住。Tā jiùshì zhèyàng de yí ge rén, gēnběn kào bu zhù. He is just such a person (→
That’s just typical of him). He is not reliable at all.
zhe 着 PARTICLE (used after a verb to indicate the action or state is going on) ■ 门开着，灯亮着，可 是
房间里没有人。Mén kāizhe, dēng liàngzhe, kěshì fángjiān li méiyǒu rén. The door was open and
the light was on but there was no one in the room.
zhèi 这 TRAD 這 PRON same as 这 zhè. Used colloquially.
zhēn 真¹ ADV really, truly, indeed ■ 中国真大 呀！Zhōngguó zhēn dà ya! China is really big! ■ 我真不
愿意去参加那个晚会。Wǒ zhēn bú yuànyì qù cānjiā nàge wǎnhuì. I really don’t want to attend
that evening party.
