Choosing Supporting Materials


THINK ABOUT a current controversy such as climate change. Why do
intelligent, well-meaning people form such different conclusions that they polar-
ize into opposing camps? Although a majority might believe that weather pat-
terns are changing, people disagree greatly about the causes or effects of these
changes. Some argue that nations and individuals must act quickly to save the
environment or human-created global warming will devastate the planet.^1 They
cite data from seemingly reputable sources such as the National Academy of
Sciences, computer models, and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate
Change as well as visual images of melting polar ice. In contrast, others,
including scientists and statisticians who’ve studied the issue in depth, agree
