  1. To understand how to adapt outlines for situations outside the classroom, visit the
online resources. This online guide to public speaking and presentation skills that
shows the general framework for outlines could be used in a scientific conference talk,
a community association meeting, and a business proposal to investors. How are these
outlines similar to and different from the content outlines described in this chapter?
Why do you think this is so?

  2. Go to your online resources to watch and critique two student speeches of your choice.
Your online resources include the transcript, outline, and video of each speech. Evalu-
ate how the speaker uses speaking notes.

  1. Outline a speech while one of your classmates delivers it. After the speech, give the
outline to the speaker, and ask him or her to check its contents for completeness and
faithfulness to the intended structure and contents.

  2. Using the same outline, ask another student to evaluate your formatting—use of inden-
tation, alternating numbers and letters, complete sentences, and the like.

  3. Work with another person in your class and create speaking notes for one of the
speeches or outlines in Appendix B.

  4. Before you give your next speech, work from your content outline to prepare a speak-
ing outline. Let a classmate evaluate both outlines and make revisions that would
    improve either one or both.

  5. Experienced speakers do not always prepare a content outline like Leif Nordstrom’s,
complete with heading and references. Ask your instructor to describe how she or he
outlines lectures, informal talks, and speeches to groups outside the classroom.
