CRitiCAl thinking ExERCiSES

  1. Think about public speakers you know who use visuals. What kinds of visual support
are most common? Which do you see used least? Which presentation technologies
are most common? Least common? Do most speakers use visual aids well, or should
they follow some tips in this chapter? Explain.

  2. Which technology for displaying visuals will you probably use for your classroom
speeches? Which would you not consider? If you are taking this course online, what is
available to you? In your future employment, what equipment do you think you’ll use
    the most? The least? Why?

  3. Make a visual package using a presentation software program such as PowerPoint.
First, draw your slides on paper, spacing the information across the slide and cutting
every unnecessary word or image. Then go to your computer and make the slides.
Experiment with layout, fonts, and colors. Use the slide show function to look at the
overall balance of the visual; adjust line spacing and font size as necessary.

  4. Browse the Internet using your favorite search engine for material about visual aids.
Analyze the credibility of several sites. Does the URL contain an .edu or a .com? Why
might that make a difference? Who wrote the materials? When? What links are there?
With this information, assess the overall usefulness of each site.

  5. Explain what kinds of visuals you think would work most appropriately for a speech on
each of the following topics. Describe more than one, if possible. Which would be best?
    Which could be Plan B?
    • The cloud cycle
    • The physical effects on the lungs of smoking
    • The Oregon Trail
    • Ozone depletion
    • Changes in mortgage interest rates over two decades

AppliCAtion ExERCiSES

  1. With a group of classmates, do an equipment assessment of the room where you’ll
speak. What technology is available? Is there an Internet connection? Where are the
electrical outlets? Can you dim the lights? If you need equipment, how do you order it?
