CELEBRATIONS, SOLEMN OCCASIONS, and other events that reaffirm group
values are the settings for special occasion speeches. Some of these speeches
celebrate or honor an event, person, or place. Others commemorate or memo-
rialize significant cultural happenings. Still others inspire or entertain. Special
occasion speeches typically have an integrative function that helps connect
people to one another and to their shared goals.^1 Overall, they reinforce and
maintain the common belief-attitude-value cluster that influences the group’s
behaviors.
