FREE SPEECH. It’s the cornerstone of US society. The nation’s founders
knew that limiting our right to express ourselves freely would limit our ability to
engage fully in a representative form of government. So they crafted the First
Amendment to the Constitution to read:

Congress shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech, or of the
press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the
Government for a redressing of grievances.^1

This does not mean freedom of speech is total. We can’t legally joke
about hijacking in an airplane,^2 and courts are increasingly ruling against hate
