A relatively hands-off response to the covid-19 outbreak ultimately did not cushion the
economy and contributed to a high death rate, especially in old-age homes, undermining
early support for the centre-left coalition government of the prime minister, Stefan
Lofven. A cross-party commission has struggled to agree on a migration policy that will
head off a challenge from the far-right Sweden Democrats without offending liberal
sensibilities, and this will remain a live political issue as temporary legislation expires in



  1. A coalition agreement that would have shifted economic policy rightwards will
    remain on hold as the government strives to restore the economy.
