Synology DS716+II
As we’ve already seen from the Synology DS216Play, the
company produces a remarkably good NAS drive. That level of
quality, in both the hardware and software, extends to the
business line too, in particular with the Plus Series.
The Plus Series NAS drives range from two-bay units, such as
this DS716+II model, through to impressive 12-bay units that
would suit the enterprise server room. Needless to say, there’s
something here for all types of business user.
What you get for your money is a unit with a quad core
2.24GHz Intel Celeron N3160 64-Bit CPU, complete with
hardware encryption, 2GB of DDR3 memory, three USB 3.0
ports, an eSATA port and the latest copy of DSM 6.1 all ready
to go.
The two hot swap drive bays can take 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch
SATA3/2 hard or solid state drives to a maximum of 20TB (a
pair of 10TB drives), formatted with EXT4 and in an assortment
of RAID levels. There’s also find a pair gigabit Ethernet ports,
and a decent sized 92mm quiet fan to help keep the fitted
drives cool.
High storage demand and scalability is handled by connecting
the separately purchased Synology DX513 Expansion Unit to
the DS716+II’s eSATA port. The DX513 can house five hard

The business NAS offers some slight differences to that of the home,
consumer model, as we’ve already outlined. This is especially apparent in
the Synology DS716+II, one of the company’s leading business focused
drives in the Plus Series.
