CYR
Smashing Pumpkins
CYR might be only the Smashing Pumpkins’
second studio album since the band’s original
lineup reformed, but this is no “business as
usual” for the one-time art rockers. The new
album hews much closer to synth-driven
goth-pop as the boys infuse electronic
influences into their sound.
FIVE FACTS:
- This is the Smashing Pumpkins’ 11th studio
album and their first since SHINY AND OH SO
BRIGHT, VOL. 1 two years prior. - The new album was “the end result of
going super deep and trying to evolve
with what we were capable of doing in the
21st century,” frontman Billy Corgan told
Apple Music. - Corgan previously experimented with
electronic music on the Pumpkins’ 1998
album Adore and his 2005 solo album
TheFutureEmbrace. - Appropriately, the chilling track “Wyttch”
from the new album was released as a single
just before Halloween. - “I’ve been banging the drum for a few years
that the band has a future as a creative unit,
not as a touring greatest-hits thing,” Corgan
has said in justification of the Pumpkins’
experimental streak.
