Annex C – Outcomes of the training

The ECDIS Training Course specification has been developed by the
Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB) in consultation with the MCA. The
specification is an integral part of the education and training programme
approved by MCA meeting the requirements of Regulation II/1 of the STCW
Convention 1978, as amended (Manila Amendments).

On successful completion of the course, a candidate will have demonstrated
the ability to:

1 use the Electronic Chart Display Information System (ECDIS) to
maintain safety of navigation and explain the principles of operation of
electronic chart systems;

2 use ECDIS as an integral part of effective bridge resource
management, in open and confined waters, in planning and
conducting a passage, in responding to navigational emergencies,
and in manoeuvring the ship and maintaining a safe navigational
watch.

Candidates must demonstrate knowledge of the carriage requirements and
key IMO performance standards for ECDIS equipment.

When conducting assessments, sufficient evidence will be required to ensure
that all performance criteria have been met across the specified range of
circumstances.

NB – the term ‘bridge resource management’ in point 2, above, refers to the
management of bridge equipment only.
