territory and culture remained intact, but in an increasingly isolated backwater.


Rome and the Greek Cities


In the sixth century, Greek culture had been mediated to Rome by Etruria. In the fourth century, with the absorption of Campania,
Rome entered into close and direct contact with the Greek world, contact that was to increase in intensity and significance over the
next three centuries.

inhumation rather than cremation, and a series of inscribed sarcophagi was found in their family tomb on the Via Appia outside
Rome. This is the earliest and the best preserved, remarkable for its helleinzing architectural decoration.
